AU - Alternate Universe
An AU (alternative universe or alternate universe) story involves fan fiction which makes major changes to the canonical storyline or premise, such as killing off the main character, changing characters' motives or alliances or, commonly, changing the setting. Generally, to be considered an alternative universe story, the change must be something that would be extremely unlikely to happen in canon, or must be contradicted by new canon information that was not released when the story was first written.
Fanfic in which the main characters adopt and/or raise children.

Character Study
Concentrates on a single character and his or her development through a story arc, or his or her personal struggles. Other characters are usually not present except in very minor roles.
A fanfic between two or more characters from different fanfiction universes (The Jetsons meet the Flintstones would be a crossover). Sometimes abbreviated as Xover.

When a fic is written during a "missing scene" in the canon, supposedly to "fill us in" to what really happened. Sometimes written as M/s.

Acronym for Plot? What Plot? A story written as an excuse to put two characters together and have sex. Sometimes means "Porn without plot."
Otherwise Called Shipping, a pairing that the writer belives should be romantically involved.
An ongoing collection of stories that follow the adventures of a character or group of characters, usually all written by one author, but sometimes including several authors working together.
Porn! But in a light amused "yeah, gimme some of that" sort of way.
Used in fan fiction to designate a short piece that centers on a character’s experiences, or on a particular moment of a relationship between characters; a short piece about a moment in the character(s) lives.
